Teaching maths concepts can be more difficult for children with additional needs, even if numbers is one of their specialist interest. My son loves numbers and letters, but now he’s heading into year 2, I know Maths is getting more concepts-based, which can be tricky with a child who is autistic and still has a speech delay.
One thing we started to talk about over the holidays is simple fractions-halves and quarters-and this Magnetic Apple fraction set from Learning Resources is the perfect way to illustrate this.

How to use Learning Resources Magnetic Apple Fractions Set
Containing 4 magnetic apples (a whole one, one that breaks into halves, another that breaks into quarters and one that breaks into thirds), this set is such a simple, visual way to teach and reinforce the idea of parts of a whole in a fun way that kids love. My son is finally in his imaginative play stage, so loved using the apples and pretending to wash them, cut them and serve them for lunch-all whilst we talked about the different parts of them.
They’re really sturdy, and whilst the 5+ age reflects the concepts you’re teaching, he also loved showing them to his cousins (who are 2 and 4 respectively) who loved playing with them since they’re really easy to grasp and can also be used to talk about colours.
The set also comes with instructions to aid play and give ideas to use them with your child-and I can see this is a set that can really grow with them (and can be used for more complex ideas as your child gets older, e.g. adding fractions together).
Is the Learning Resource’s Apple Magnetic Apple Fraction Set Suitable for those with additional needs~?

The items are really durable, have no small parts (if mouthing is an issue) and break down a complex topic into a really simple, visual way. It’s such a simple toy but also allows you to teach at the level of the child and the game ideas in the booklet are really helpful too.
The verdict: Our review of Learning Resource’s Magnetic Apple Fraction Set
After a few weeks, this is still one of my son’s most reached for toys and has really helped him start to understand different fractions before he heads back to school in a really fun way.
